JACQUES VILLENEUVE TO RACE A SUBARU WRX STI AT GP3R IN AMERICAS RALLYCROSS

Indy 500 winner and Formula One World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has signed to race in his home round of Americas Rallycross (ARX) next week at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières in Canada (August 4-5) for Subaru Rally Team USA.

Villeneuve will line up alongside Sweden’s Patrik Sandell and Australia’s Chris Atkinson in the factory-prepared three-car Subaru WRX STI effort for the Canadian event, the third ever round of ARX. The Canadian hero won the Indianapolis 500 in 1995 and the Formula 1 World Championship in 1997. He already has rallycross experience under his belt, he raced in the 2014 FIA World Rallycross Championship, including at his home round in Trois-Rivières.

“Trois-Rivières has always felt like my motorsports home, so it's once again a pleasure to be back. Rallycross has grown exponentially since I've last raced these amazing cars, so it's good to be part of a sport on the rise,” said Villeneuve. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be racing a works' Subaru and will do everything in my power to help the team in its Americas Rallycross endeavor.”

The Vermont SportsCar Subaru drivers have been in the thick of the ARX action in the first two rounds of the year, at the Speedmachine Festival in Silverstone, UK in May and at the first round on the Circuit of The Americas new permanent rallycross facility, the Dirtfish ARX of COTA. Sandell and 17-time X Games medallist Travis Pastrana have so far scored the best results of the season with a pair of fourth places and Subaru will benefit next week from Villeneuve’s knowledge of the Trois-Rivières circuit.

“Jacques Villeneuve is a global motorsport icon, and Subaru is excited to welcome him to Americas Rallycross behind the wheel of a WRX STI,” said William Stokes, Motorsports Manager for Subaru of America. “With his local background and tremendous success in American racing, Jacques will be a thrill for both Canadian and U.S. fans.”

Villeneuve is a familiar face at GP3R, where he has competed in rallycross and in road course racing. He will be one of two home heroes racing in their home country as part of ARX, together with Hoonigan Loenbro driver Steve Arpin.

“Jacques is part of the GP3R family. We're always happy to have him back. It's a treat for our local fans to once again have a native son to cheer on in rallycross,” said GP3R general manager, Dominic Fugère.

Jacques Villeneuve will be at the wheel of a Subaru WRX STI at GP3R, August 4-5, as the ARX supercars take on the GP3R track. A test and press conference, where Villeneuve and the team will meet representatives from the media, are planned for Wednesday, August 2 at Circuit ICAR, in Mirabel.
