Up close at Kimi Räikkönen’s NASCAR Trucks debut

Imagem
Up close at Kimi Räikkönen’s NASCAR Trucks debut by Jamey Price Kimi Räikkönen, NASCAR truck, Charlotte Superspeedway, 2011 Lewis Hamilton had his first taste of NASCAR at Watkins Glen last week. But his former rival Kimi Räikkönen has taken things a step further, starting a couple of races in NASCAR’s junior categories. Jamey Price was at Charlotte Superspeedway last month to watch Räikkönen’s first race in a NASCAR Truck. I have long been a Kimi Räikkönen fan. It’s no secret that the Iceman is notoriously self absorbed, quiet and rarely cracks a smile in anyone’s direction. Much to my surprise, that Kimi Raikkonen that we all know from his Formula One years seems to have been pushed aside and in his place seems a genuinely humble, smiling and even an engaging character. I was contracted to cover Räikkönen’s first attempt at NASCAR Truck racing at Charlotte Motorspeedway on May 20th as a photographer. It was a first for me as well in that despite being born and raised in Charlotte Nor...

Kyle Busch says money not an issue with Raikkonen

Kyle Busch says money not an issue with Raikkonen KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) -- Kyle Busch dispelled the notion that a lack of funding played a role in Kimi Raikkonen's brief stint with the NASCAR star's racing team. But Busch couldn't clarify the former Formula One champion's future in NASCAR or with Kyle Busch Motorsports. Busch said Friday before practice at Kansas Speedway, site of Sunday's Sprint Cup race, that money wasn't an issue with the Finn, who signed a deal with Kyle Busch Motorsports in April to run three to five Trucks Series races. Raikkonen ran a pair of Trucks races, then decided to run the Nationwide event last week in Charlotte, finishing four laps down in 27th. "They paid for the Truck races, but then he said, 'OK, let's do a Nationwide race.' So, we took those funds from the end of the year and put them to that Nationwide race. So, they are paid in full for the races they've run," Busch said. Busch said he hasn't d...

Trilha sonora da Ludy - Nascar Truck Series: Charlotte 2011

Imagem
Beijinhos, Ludy

Montoya praises Raikkonen's debut

Imagem
Montoya praises Raikkonen's debut By Diego Mejia Juan Pablo Montoya praised Kimi Raikkonen's performance on his NASCAR debut last weekend and does not anticipate that the Finn will have much trouble quickly stepping up the stock car ladder. The Colombian followed the debut of his former McLaren Formula 1 team-mate closely, even offering advice during practice and ahead of the race - and admitting they probably talked more than they ever did during their time in F1. Before Raikkonen ran at Charlotte, Montoya had said he would not choose the mile-and-a-half venue for a start in NASCAR but following Friday's race he said the Finn showed he could adapt quickly not only to the car and track but also to the different style of racing, despite a few brushes with the wall. "Kimi did really good," said Montoya. "I thing it's good that the trucks are a bit flexible and the noses don't push in the fenders like we do [in Cup] but I think overall he did a good job....

"Not even Dennis was surprised over Räikkönen's switch" by Heikki Kulta

Imagem
Not even Dennis was surprised over Räikkönen's switch Turun Sanomat 22.5 2011 23:28:50 Kimi Räikkönen's surprising debut in USA:s Nascar-serie took place the same weekend as Spain GP. In spite of that the matter was on the wall even on the F1-paddock. Ron Dennis is the man who came up with the nickname ’’Iceman’’ for Räikkönen. How did the former team manager feel about Räikkönen's Nascar-switch? – Kimi has always liked to do different things and what he himself wants. That's why I'm not at all surprised over what he is doing. He drove quite well rally too. I don't know more about the Nascar-thing except that he went there, Dennis replied. Räikkönen's physical trainer from Sauber, Josef Leberer, admits that Kimi driving in USA was a pleasant surprise. – Kimi was a pale and thin guy when he started with us but while he was driving the bike I immediately noticed his body's coordination. At that point I knew that since he has a natural talent to drive fast,...

"Second purgatory" by Heikki Kulta

Second purgatory Turun Sanomat 21.5 2011 22:35:25 - Column 21.5. Lets go ten years back in time. Kimi Räikkönen, 21, flew for the first time in his life outside Europe and got to start his F1-career in Australia 2001 with a trial license since he had the least experience of small formulas of all times. "Good heavens, what will come from it" the critical F1-world sighed beforehand quoting Antero Mertaranta's poetry. (Finnish commentator in icehockey) There came immediately a 6th position in a GP and Räikkönen cashed in all his promises at once. On Friday night in Charlotte those exciting times came back to my mind. Once again Rookie-Räikkönen was a complete rookie out in the world. The Nascar-people did however welcome the F1-champion but nobody believed that the serie's first Finn driver of all times could do anything else but fail. Good heavens, what will come from it this time... It was a year and a half since Räikkönen had raced on tracks and USA's ovals canno...

"Rally more difficult to learn for Räikkönen than Nascar" by Heikki Kulta

Rally more difficult to learn for Räikkönen than Nascar Turun Sanomat 21.5 2011 22:35:56 Kimi Räikkönen is an inborn track-racer. That was once again proved to the whole motorsporting world when the F1-champion drove without practising his Nascar-debut in an oval race from start to finish without spinning even once during the battle. Räikkönen will continue this new adventure next Saturday on this same Charlotte oval, but this time he will drive in Nascar's 2nd highest class Nationwide, where the powers and the drivability of the cars are something completely different than the truck-cars. The feelings on Friday in Charlotte's track-area spoke for themself over how much the success meant for Räikkönen. Usually you don't get Nascar-spurs in a jiffy, therefore Räikkönen's performance got the American experts to research the statistics to see how other rookies have started from truck-level. Rookie-Räikkönen was the best of the three former F1-drivers after Nelson Piquet ju...

Nationwide Series: Nemechek team steers Raikkonen's ride

Nemechek team steers Raikkonen's ride by Lee Spencer The pieces to the Kimi Raikkonen Nationwide Series puzzle are coming together. As Kyle Busch left the media center Friday night following his 28th career win in the truck series, his story changed on whether his team would field a car for Raikkonen next week from “no” to “maybe.” But before Busch walked out he added, “but I won’t own it.” FOXSports.com has learned that the car is being assembled by Kyle Busch Motorsports but the owner points will come from Joe Nemechek’s No. 87 entry, registered under NEMCO Motorsports, which is currently 19th in the NASCAR Nationwide Series points standings. The crew will come from NEMCO with additional support from KBM employees. NEMCO will provide transporter, equipment and back up car for the race. Raikkonen finished 15th in his NASCAR Camping World Truck debut. The 2007 Formula One champion was approved to compete in next Saturday’s Nationwide Series race prior to Friday night’s event. "Räikkönen earned his Nascar-spurs" by Heikki Kulta

Imagem
Räikkönen earned his Nascar-spurs Turun Sanomat 21.5 2011 08:25:45 Kimi Räikkönen's first and only Camping World Truck -race on Charlotte's Motor Speedway brought back Kimi's passion to compete also in track-racing. Räikkönen shuttled in both the end and the top during the race that was filled with constant SC-car incidents - at his best he was 5th and at his worst he was 34th. Räikkönen started from 31st position and the end result from this exciting hour and a half was 15th position - and the prize he got was the respect from his competitors, which is so important in Nascar-races. As usual Räikkönen drove fairly yet also roughly when it was necessary. You could see from Räikkönen how good the race felt and how pleased he was with his debut in new challenges that was so much fussed about. Kimi was the best of three former F1-drivers when Nelson Piquet junior spun in the end and Max Papis crashed earlier. Great race - what did you think of it yourself? – It was pretty good....

Raikkonen expected to compete in next week's Nationwide race

Imagem
Raikkonen expected to compete in next week's Nationwide race CONCORD, N.C.—Kyle Busch fessed up. His comments earlier Friday weren't the whole truth, when he said he wouldn't field a Nationwide car for Kimi Raikkonen next week. Busch has been working on a deal that will put Raikkonen in a Toyota for the May 28 Nationwide race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In fact, the car is already at the Kyle Busch Motorsports shop. "I don't own it," Busch said with a sly smile after winning Friday night's North Carolina Education Lottery 200 Camping World Truck Series race at Charlotte. Who does own it, Busch wouldn't reveal, after admitting the car was a Toyota. In ...
