McLaren on the up, but Button plays it down
McLaren on the up, but Button plays it down
Despite getting well inside the top
ten in a free practice session for the first time this season, Jenson Button
was playing down the much discussed gains made by McLaren-Honda following free
practice, insisting it has been a 'weird day'.
With the team having pledged to
bring significant updates to its package ahead of the first European round of
2015 – as well as a new black livery -, though Button and Fernando Alonso were
down the order in FP1, Button made big gains in FP2, going seventh fastest when
on the softer tyre.
Despite this, the former champion
was philosophical about the result, signalling concern with the car's
performance on the prime tyre in FP2.
“It's been a tough day today, I
think for everyone,” he said.” P1 with the prime tyre felt reasonably good, but
tough in terms of the balance with the wind and the hot temperatures. In P2 we
really struggled on the prime tyre but the option was a much better. There's a
lot of work for us to do to optimise what we have. It's been a good day in terms
of data but there's a lot of work to do to figure out why the car is doing
certain things.
Indeed, though Button was certainly
pleased to see P7 alongside his name after FP2, he maintains you cannot read
too much into free practice.
“It's still only practice. We always
seem quicker in P2 than in qualifying. We'll see, hopefully we can have a clean
weekend and then we'll see where we stand. I'd say it's a promising day when
you compare us to the front guys anyway.”
