Displeasure with tyres

Turun Sanomat 11.2 2011 21:44:25

Whether it's WRC or F1-tests the gang is grumpy over the tyres. In rally they miss Pirelli's stud-tyres to Sweden's snow. In F1 again the complaining about the tyres being worn-out faster than a latino-driver's patience continues.

In rally they have switched to Michelin's tyre-era. The winter tyre is just as wide as the regulations say but the studs aren't as long as Pirelli's was last year. When the snow conditions in Sweden surprised the whole rally gang it was like they would have drove without grip in a waterslide on Thursday and Friday.

Jari-Matti Latvala was already missing a lot the more traditional and narrow winter tyre which would go through a snow like this more effeciently. Even last year's wider Pirelli would help. Michelin's slit is more lower and fills with snow faster. After that it's adieu to the grip and the slit is in command when studs in the tyres don't help at all.

The conditions are extremely challenging and will change during the weekend when the snowy and fierce wind turns into a freezing subzero weather. The drivers are as it is trying to find the right rhythm with the new cars and a weather condition like this is disturbing their concentration badly.

In F1-tests in Jerez they drive on a track where the tyres get a real torment. Pirelli has brought a little bit more lasting medium tyres and according to what I have heard especially Red Bull and Ferrari have started to get along with them fairly well already.

However the medium tyre still loses quickly about 1-1,5 seconds of their performance ability after 8-10 laps but after that it keeps it normal during a normal race.

The soft tyre still gives a headache because the worn-out and drop of performance ability can crash very quickly.

For the rally gang the problem is limitated to this only winter rally and it wouldn't even have appeared unless the snow conditions wouldn't have been so exceptional when compared to all tests.

On the F1-department they will measure how well Pirelli works during racing weekends. And they are definitely not going to get similar grip- and endurance-problems in Bahrain's heat as they now have in rally Hagfors surroundings.
