David Coulthard will start in DTM

Well-known, successful and charismatic addition to DTM: 2001 Formula One World Championship runner-up and 13-times Grand Prix winner David Coulthard (39) will start 2010 with an AMG Mercedes C-Class in the DTM series. The 2010 season will start at Hockenheim on 25 April 2010.

Between 1994 and 2008, David Coulthard competed in 246 Grands Prix. 150 of those races were for the McLaren Mercedes team from 1996 to 2004 and during this period, David achieved 12 of his 13 Grand Prix wins and was second in the Drivers’ Championship in 2001. In 1998, the year in which McLaren Mercedes won the Constructors’ World Championship, David was third in the Drivers’ Championship and contributed one win and 56 points to the team’s achievements.

Together with Mika Häkkinen, Formula One World Champion in 1998 and 1999, and a Mercedes-Benz DTM driver from 2005 to 2008, David formed the McLaren Mercedes driver line-up between 1996 and 2001, a pairing which is the longest in Formula One at one team. Today, Mika and David are well known and successful ambassadors for motorsport. Before retiring from racing, David drove for Red Bull Racing from 2005 to 2008 and is now a regular F1 visitor as a TV commentator for the British broadcaster BBC.

David tested the AMG Mercedes C-Class at Monteblanco in southern Spain in February for the first time, followed by tests at Portimao in Portugal and Valencia in Spain. On 24 March, David took part in the official DTM test at Valencia, the venue for the second round of the 2010 season on 23 May.

David Coulthard: “I have always enjoyed the exciting DTM races, both as a TV viewer and at the race tracks, and I am sure that I will feel the same now as a driver. I am really looking forward to racing again. I am, of course, aware of the fact that racing within this competitive field will be very challenging in the beginning; which has also been proved by the initial results of Jean Alesi, my long-time companion Mika Häkkinen and most recently Ralf Schumacher. However, like these three, I am a racer who looks forward to the competition and therefore I can’t wait for the beginning of the season at Hockenheim on 25 April. I particularly look forward to returning to racing with my long-time friends at Mercedes-Benz and I am proud to be at the same time an ambassador for “Wings for Life”, the spinal cord research foundation of Red Bull.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “The engagement of David Coulthard is great news for the DTM and for Mercedes-Benz. David has been working with us for 15 years, nine of them at McLaren Mercedes and David accomplished to become runner-up in the World Championship. David is prominent, competent and sympathetic - there are only a few of such top-class representatives of motor racing with an international reputation. I am happy for everybody in our team that David enters the DTM actively with us and it’s a great pleasure for us that we thus can support also Red Bull’s “Wings for Life” foundation with its important goals.”
