Octeto entrevista: Evenstar Saima

Como falei na semana passada, a seção Octeto entrevista hoje teria uma convidada de outro país. Trata-se da inglesa Evenstar Saima, uma querida companheira de blogsfera e de torcida por Kimi Räikkönen.

Não vou falar muito, porque a entrevista está aí para falar por mim. Espero que gostem!

1. Saima, conte-nos um pouco sobre você. O que você faz? Onde você vive? Saima, tell us a bit about you. What do you do? Where do you live?

Eu nasci em Londres e tenho vivido aqui por todos os 21 anos da minha vida. Estou no meu último ano na universidade, estudando Jornalismo. Eu escolhi Jornalismo principalmente por causa da minha paixão por escrever e particularmente por acompanhar a Fórmula 1. Eu tenho assistido F-1 nos últimos 12 anos ou mais. Eu espero um dia poder me tornar uma repórter e encontrar todos os pilotos e estrelas no pit-lane e no paddock, e conseguir ir a todas as corridas e estar perto da ação! Eu sou uma grande fã de Kimi desde 2002 e uso o meu blog de fã dedicado a ele e aos seus fãs para manter fresco meu interesse tanto na F-1 quanto no jornalismo.

I was born in London and have been here all 21 years of my life. I’m in my final year at university, studying Journalism. I chose Journalism mainly because of my passion for writing and particularly following Formula One. I’ve been watching it for the past 12 years or so. I hope one day that I could become a reporter and meet all the drivers and stars in the pit-lane and paddock, and get to go to all the races and be close to the action! I’m a huge fan of Kimi since 2002 and use my fan-site blog dedicated to him and his fans to keep my interest in both F1 and journalism fresh.

2. Você é uma das fãs de Kimi Räikkönen mais famosas que conhecemos. Por que ele? You’re one of the most famous fans of Kimi Räikkönen we know. Why him?

Kimi é realmente um ser humano especial. Não apenas com relação ao seu trabalho, mas ele tem esta luz energética em seus olhos, que brilha em qualquer coisa que ele faça. Ele é o piloto mais rápido na terra e eu posso dizer isto facilmente. Vendo-o “crescer” na F-1 tem sido uma experiência maravilhosa como fã, porque embora ele tenha amadurecido e se tornado mais inteligente do que ele já era, ele não deixou a fama ou o sucesso ou a derrota afetá-lo. Seu talento é algo que eu realmente admiro, não apenas por ele ser realmente rápido, mas porque ele tem valores e os coloca em primeiro lugar e não os sacrificará não importa o quanto a mídia ou o que as pessoas pensem. Eles tentam importuná-lo, mas ele de alguma forma consegue gerenciar completamente qualquer tipo de interferência em sua vida porque ele ama sua família e amigos e sua privacidade. Ele pode ser o cara mais rápido no planeta e extremamente popular, tanto por razões positivas ou negativas, mas ele nunca permite que passem por cima dele. Eu acho isto uma atitude muito admirável que ele tem. Sou muito sortuda, por ter a chance de poder conhecer tantas pessoas ao redor do mundo apenas por ser uma fã de Kimi Räikkönen. Eu só sou “famosa” na comunidade de fãs porque eu tento dar o que os fãs merecem e eu estou muito feliz que tenha tocado tantos deles por isso. Como eu também sou uma fã eu sei o que as pessoas gostam de ver e experimentar, e por eu curtir tanto isto é um sentimento ainda melhor ser capaz de fazer isto por nós. Isto trouxe muita coisa boa para todos nós, incluindo a mim mesma e eu aprecio muito isto. Tenho que agradecer a Kimi!Kimi is a really special human being. Not only in regards to his job but he has this energetic light in his eyes, that shines in anything that he does. He is the fastest driver on earth and I can say that easily. Watching him ‘grow’ in F1 has been an amazing experience as a fan, because although he has matured and become wiser than he already was, he hasn’t let fame or success or defeat affect him. His talent is something I really admire, not just for being really fast but he has his values and he puts them first and will not sacrifice them no matter how much the media and what people think. They try to break him but he somehow manages to completely reject any interference in his life because he loves his family and friends and his privacy. He may be the fastest guy on the planet and extremely popular, for both positive and negative reasons, but he has never let it climb over him. I think that’s a very admirable attitude that he carries. I’m very lucky, that I’ve been able to get to know so many people all over the world just by being a Kimi Raikkonen supporter. I’m only ‘famous’ in the fan community because I try to give what the fans deserve and I’m really happy that I’ve reached a lot of them through doing so. As I’m a fan myself I know what I’d like to see and experience and because I enjoy it so much it’s even a better feeling being able to do it for the rest of us. It has brought a lot of good things to everyone, including myself and I treasure it. I have to thank Kimi!

3. Quando e por que a F-1 entrou em sua vida? When and why F1 came into your life?

Bem, eu costumava assistir F-1 com meu irmão quando ele era garoto, ele foi a razão pela qual fui fisgada pelo automobilismo, já que ninguém que eu conhecia assistia! Eu me lembro de cada tarde de domingo quando minha mãe fazia um grande almoço, meu irmão e eu apenas assistíamos aqueles carros vermelhos e prateados lutarem pela vitória (Hakkinen e Schumacher!), eu era muito pequena para entender a corrida, todos os décimos de um segundo e os pitstops e estas coisas - eu apenas gostava de assistir os carros. Mas durante os anos 2000, eu me tornei mais ativa em acompanhar o esporte, lendo revistas de F-1 e usando a internet para ver as notícias e coisas do tipo. Eu acho que conforme fui crescendo, eu não era a garota típica que gostava de coisas de garotas, que gostava de fofocar e falar sobre garotos e usar maquiagem. Isto não era eu. Então quando eu me interessei seriamente em um esporte como a F-1, eu realmente me senti como uma alienígena, especialmente na escola! Nenhum dos meus amigos se importava com isto. Mas sou grata ao meu irmão e a minha família, que me permitiram curtir o que eu quis e não me criticaram. Eu sou muito mais fã hoje do que meu irmão!
Well I used to watch F1 anyway with my brother as a kid, he was the reason I got hooked on motorsport, as no one else I knew did! I remember every Sunday afternoon when my mum would make a big lunch, my brother and I would just watch those red and silver cars fight for the win (Hakkinen and Schumacher!) I was too small to understand the racing, all the tenths of a second and the pitstops and things – I just liked watching the cars. But only during the 2000s, I became more active in following the sport, reading F1 magazines and using the internet to see news and stuff. I think as I was growing up, I wasn’t the typical girl who did girly things, who liked to gossip and talk about boys and wear make up. That wasn’t me. So when I was seriously interested in a sport like F1, I really did feel like an alien, especially at school! None of my friends cared about it. But I’m grateful for my brother and my family, who let me enjoy what I wanted and not criticize me. I’m an even bigger fan than my brother himself now! 

4. O quanto é difícil para você viver na terra de Lewis Hamilton, sendo fã de Kimi? Você sofre algum tipo de preconceito por causa disto? How hard it is for you to live in the land of Lewis Hamilton being a Kimi fan? Do you suffer some kind of prejudice because of that?

Definitivamente. É natural, todos os países são de alguma forma ignorantes aos pilotos de outros países. Então eu não fico brava com relação a isto, nem fico questionando a respeito. O que você pode fazer, além de escrever e compartilhar isto com todos! Eu tive uma experiência engraçada durante o GP da Inglaterra de 2007. Naquele GP, Hamilton era o cara, obviamente. A corrida estava com ingressos esgotados, com mais fãs vindo do que nos anos recentes, tudo por causa de Hamilton e o excitamento que ele trouxe ao esporte. Mas como um dos poucos fãs de Kimi, eu não me importei. Eu tinha minha bandeira do Kimi e estava orgulhosa. Eu sofri um estranho preconceito por parte dos fãs ingleses de Hamilton, tanto no treino de sábado quanto na corrida de domingo. Alguém disse “quem gostaria de ver este banner?” ou “tire esta p%&*# de bandeira da minha cara”. Mas eu apenas ri. E você já deve saber que eu apareci na TV em ambos os dias com a minha bandeira do Kimi. Kimi venceu a corrida, eu estava extremamente feliz e não me importei com o que os outros pensavam. Os fãs espanhóis anti-Hamilton podem até ir para os noticiários por terem sido racistas e coisas do tipo, mas os fãs ingleses podem ser tão rudes e agressivos apenas porque eles são fãs de Hamilton. Eu sei disso porque passei pela experiência em primeira mão. No geral, não é difícil lidar com o complicado, porque não há muitos fãs de F-1 que eu conheça aqui.Definitely. It’s natural, all the countries are somewhat ignorant to the other country’s drivers. So I don’t get too angry or question it. What can you do, apart from write and share about it! I had a funny experience, during the British Grand Prix in 2007. At that GP, Hamilton was the man, obviously. The race was sold out, with more fans coming than in recent years, all because of Hamilton and the excitement he brought to the sport. But as one of the few Kimi fans, I didn’t mind. I had my Kimi flag and was proud. I did get some strange abuse from British/Hamilton fans, on both Saturday qualifying and Sunday race day. Someone would say “who would want to see that banner” or “get that f*cking flag out of my face”. But I just laughed. And you might already know I did come on TV both days with my Kimi flag. Kimi won that race, so I was extremely happy and didn’t care what others thought. Spanish anti-Hamilton fans get in the news for being racist and things, but the British fans can be just as rude and insulting just because they’re a Hamilton fan. I know because I’ve experienced it first-hand. It’s not that hard to deal with though in general, because there aren’t many F1 fans I know here anyway!

5. Qual é a maior lição que você já aprendeu por seguir um esporte como a F-1? What is the biggest lesson you have ever learned by following a sport such as F1?

Eu acho que aprender a lidar com a decepção é um dos mais difíceis e comuns desafios que um esporte como a F-1 pode trazer. Assim como equipes e pilotos podem ficar realmente desapontados, os fãs também sentem o mesmo. Especialmente como um fã de Kimi, porque ele já teve tantos momentos ruins especialmente na McLaren (com a fraca confiabilidade e às vezes somente o destino mesmo). É muito frustrante e difícil aceitar de primeira, mas eu acho que a cada vez fica mais fácil e o mesmo se aplica à vida pessoal. Um bom exemplo foi o que aconteceu no GP da Bélgica de 2008. Kimi já estava tendo um ano difícil, mas ele foi muito bem e estava a algumas voltas de vencer a corrida, em seu circuito favorito. E terminou de uma forma tão amarga; choveu e o duelo com Hamilton ficou muito confuso (embora ótimo de se ver), e então Kimi bateu. Foi como ir do céu ao inferno em 5 minutos. Foi muito ruim para Kimi, o que significava ruim para mim mesma. Mas eu compreendi isto de uma melhor forma do que eu fiz com as decepções em 2005 e 2006. Você tem decepções na vida, se alguma coisa não sai do seu jeito. Mas uma coisa que eu aprendi é que isto acontece e você tem que seguir em frente e ser maduro a respeito disto. Kimi, neste caso, é um grande exemplo para mim. Ele é muito forte, mentalmente. E é por isso que eu sempre torço por ele com o bordão “Keep Flying Kimi”. Eu também disse ao meu irmão a mesma coisa recentemente, quando tivemos grandes decepções em casa. Eu disse a ele que temos que seguir em frente, e foi o que ele fez.I think learning to deal with disappointment is one of the most hard and common challenges a sport like F1 can bring. Just as the teams and drivers can get really disappointed, the fans also feel the same. Especially as Kimi fan, because he had a lot of bad times especially at McLaren (with poor reliability and sometimes just fate it seems). It’s very frustrating and hard to accept at first, but I think each time it gets easier and the same applies to personal lives. A good example is what happened at the Belgian GP in 2008. Kimi already was having a hard year but he did really well and was just a few laps away from winning the race, at his favourite circuit. It ended very bitterly; it rained and the duel with Hamilton got too messy (although great to watch), and then Kimi crashed out. It was like going to heaven and hell all in 5 minutes. It was really bad for Kimi, which meant I felt bad myself. But I coped with it much better than I did with his disappointments in 2005 and 2006. You get disappointments in life, if something does not go your way. But the thing I’ve learnt is that it happens and you just have to keep moving and be mature about it. Kimi, in this case, is a great role model for me. He’s very strong, mentally. And that’s why I always cheer him on with the motto “Keep flying Kimi”. I also told my brother the same thing recently, when we had some big disappointments at home. I told him to keep moving, and he does.

6. E sobre os campeões ingleses? Você tem um favorito? What about the British champions? Do you have a favorite one?

Eu não estava assistindo F-1 quando tivemos nossos campeões ingleses, infelizmente! Lewis Hamilton é o único piloto inglês que eu testemunhei, e embora suas conquistas tenham sido de fato impressionantes, eu não poderia dizer nada uma vez que não posso compará-lo com gerações mais velhas, com carros diferentes ou não.

I wasn’t watching F1 when we had our previous British champions unfortunately! Lewis Hamilton is the only British champion I’ve witnessed and although his achievements are very impressive indeed, I won’t say anything else as I can’t compare him with older generations, with the different cars and what not.

7. Fale-nos sobre o pior e o melhor momento que você já assistiu desde que acompanha o esporte. Tell us about the worst and the best moment you have already watched since you follow the sport.

O pior momento…nossa, há tantos! O pior evento tem que ser o GP dos EUA em Indianápolis em 2005 quando apenas 3 equipes correram. Embora o pior “momento”, em um curto espaço de tempo, tenha sido o GP de Nurburgring em 2005 com a falha da suspensão dianteira do carro de Kimi na última volta. O melhor momento ainda é a ultrapassagem de Kimi sobre Fisichella na última volta do GP do Japão de 2005. Eu poderia ter dito quando ele se tornou campeão mundial no Brasil em 2007, mas isto foi tão inacreditável que não caiu a ficha até alguns dias depois, embora eu tenha chorado quando ele recebeu seu troféu no pódio!

The worst moment…oh there are too many! The worst event has to be the US GP at Indianapolis 2005 when only 3 teams raced. The worst ‘moment’ though, as in a very short time, is Kimi’s last lap front suspension failure at the Nurburgring in 2005. The best moment is still Kimi’s last lap overtaking manouvre on Fisichella at the Japanese GP in 2005. I would have said when he became champion at Brazil in 2007 but that was so unbelievable that it didn’t sink in until a few days later, even though I cried when he accepted his trophy on the podium!

8. O que você pensa sobre o interesse das mulheres na F-1? E como os homens ingleses lidam com isto? What do you think about women interest in F1? And how British men deal with that?

Eu acho que geralmente é bom que todo mundo se envolva. As mulheres já têm trabalhado na F-1 mais do que nunca na última década ou mais. Embora a maioria das mulheres trabalhando esteja principalmente na Assessoria de Imprensa, a maioria das fãs mulheres do esporte certamente são tão fanáticas quanto os homens quando se trata de corrida. Eu já percebi que alguns homens não conseguem aceitar a opinião das mulheres, o que é um tanto surpreendente. É como voltar para o berçário. Os garotos têm seus brinquedos e quando uma garota quer o mesmo para brincar, os garotos ficam muito defensivos. Eu acho que é a natureza deles!
I think it’s generally good for everyone involved. Women have been working in F1 more than ever in the past decade or so. Although the majority of women work mainly in public relations, most female fans of the sport certainly are just as hardcore as the males when it comes to the racing. I have seen that some men can’t handle a women’s opinion, which is a bit surprising. It’s like being back at nursery. Boys have their toys and when a girl wants the same to play with, the boys go extra defensive. I think it’s just nature!

9. Quais são as habilidades que um piloto precisa para ser campeão do mundo? What are the skills a driver needs to have to be a world champion?

Para ser honesta, as habilidades para ser um campeão são as mesmas que eles precisam ter para entrar na F-1. Ser rápido, suave e agressivo tudo de uma vez. E muitas das vezes, depende muito mais do carro mais do que do piloto hoje em dia. O piloto pode ter todas as qualidades no mundo, mas se o carro não for capaz de servir ao piloto. Eu acho que os pilotos têm que ser rápidos em todas as condições (molhado ou seco), para garantir que sejam candidatos competitivos ao campeonato. E um pouco de sorte!

To be honest, the skills to be champion are the same as what they needed to get into F1 with! Quick, smooth and aggressive all in one. And a lot of the time, it depends on the car more than the driver nowadays. The driver can have all the skills in the world, but the car isn’t able to serve the driver. I think the drivers have to be quick in all conditions (wet and dry), to make sure they’re the most competitive candidate for the championship. And a bit of luck!

10. Quem é o maior piloto da história da F-1 na sua opinião? Who is the greatest driver in the history of F1 in your opinion?Novamente, eu apenas vi menos do que um terço da história da F-1. Então dos pilotos que eu conheço, eu acho que é Kimi Räikkönen. Seguido muito de perto por Fernando Alonso.Again, I have only witnessed less than a third of F1’s history. So from the drivers I know, it has to be Kimi Raikkonen. Closely followed by Fernando Alonso.

11. O que você acha sobre Felipe Massa? What do you think about Felipe Massa?Ele é bom, realmente bom. Mas nada especial, na minha opinião! Ele é realmente rápido, mas os outros 19 pilotos no grid também são. É apenas a natureza de corrida do Massa mesmo que eu acredito ser mais fraca se comparada a dos outros. Ele consegue fazer grandes manobras, devo dizer!He’s good, real good. But nothing special, in my opinion! He is really quick, but so are 19 other drivers on the grid. It’s just the racing-nature of Massa that I believe is very weak compared to the others. He has pulled off some great moves though!

12. Quem é Kimi Räikkönen para você? Who is Kimi Räikkönen for you?Meu mundo. Eu só posso ser sincera quanto a isto. Você sabe aqueles espaços em branco entre qualquer coisa na sua vida, seu família, seus amigos, seu trabalho/estudo? Kimi preenche estes espaços para mim e afeta tudo. Não há um único dia que eu não tenha o apoiado ou mencionado seu nome, desde que eu me tornei sua fã.My world. I can only be honest about it. You know, those blank spaces between everything in your life, your family, your friends, your job/study? Kimi fills up those spaces for me and he affects everything. There hasn’t been a single day I haven’t supported him or mentioned his name, since I became his fan.

13. Como você descobriu o blog do Octeto? How did you discover Octeto’s blog?
Eu acho que o Octeto mencionou meu blog e então fiquei curiosa para ver o que era o Octeto! Eu visitei o Octeto e fiquei maravilhada com quanta informação havia sobre os grandes oito pilotos – Kimi sendo um deles!I think it was when Octeto mentioned my blog and so I was eager to see what Octeto was! I visited Octeto and was amazed with how much information there is on eight great drivers – Kimi being one of them!

14. Quando você visita o blog do Octeto, o quão difícil é para você o fator idioma? When you visit Octeto’s blog, how hard it is for you the factor foreign language?
Não tão difícil. Eu só falo inglês, mas com o passar dos anos conhecendo tantos fãs de Kimi ao redor do mundo, eu me familiarizei com diferentes idiomas. O Octeto é bastante simples eu acho – então eu não fico assustada ou entro em pânico com a barreira do idioma.Not too hard. I only speak English but over the years after knowing a lot of Kimi fans all over the world, I get familiar with different languages. Octeto comes across really simple I think – so I don’t get scared or overwhelmed with the language barrier!

15. O que você acha do blog do Octeto Racing Team? What do you think about Octeto Racing Team’s blog?É um blog de fãs de automobilismo muito inovador. Definitivamente o melhor que eu já vi, e é criado por garotas inteligentes que não têm medo de mostrar sua paixão, e também permanecem verdadeiras a elas mesmas e amam um pouco de glamour!

It’s a very refreshing motorsport fan-blog. Definitely the best I’ve seen, and it is created by intelligent girls who aren’t afraid to show their passion, and also stay true to themselves and love a bit of glamour!
