Iceman's Club: "Naquele domingo em Abu Dhabi 2012..." by Antonio Magno

The Cherry on the cake...

"Driving and racing to win – there’s nothing else". That's one of Kimi's quote about his way of life. And probably is one of the reason of his come-back to F1 too. Let be honest, every supporter of his hoped to see him again on the top of the podium, at least once, and especially after the impressive performance during the Bahrain Gp. In fact, despite sometimes Lotus lost the chance to win, E20 looked really good until the race of Spa.

But when Spa was over with only a second place, the season was going to be harder. The car wasn't fast like before, probably for questions about the budget and the development of that damned DDRS that made lost precious energies to improve the car in other ways.

To be honest, until Indian GP, at the end of the day the season was fucking good for Kimi. Let be honest, an year ago after his signature with Lotus, no one could imagine all the podiums and the points he collected after 17 rounds! But we know, often people look at what they miss instead of that they have reached. And Kimi's season was missing of what in Italy we call "the cherry on the cake".

So, at 3 rounds to go, the hope was nearly vanished. Thinking to beat Vettel and Hamilton was really out of any logic, insane indeed. But never say never...

The weekend of Abu Dhabi began in the usual way, in fact the Friday was calm and slow. On Saturday Kimi got the fifth place on the grid, while the gap with the pole man was a bit lower than last times. And then in the night the penalty for Vettel moved Kimi a place ahead. But hopes of victory: 0%.

But the music after the start was really different. First of all, the start of Kimi made me remember that of Spa 2009, I think them are very similar: a good start avoiding the car ahead of him. He was really great jumping to the second place before the first corner. Meanwhile, Hamilton began to fly as predictable, until the mistake at one of the slow chicane of the track: Hamilton braked too late and had to slow down, giving the chance to Kimi to reduce the gap and attack him, really like Spa 2008. I started to support him in front of the TV like many others I wonder, but this time went in a different way, cause Lewis had a good speed and luckily for him he defended his position.

But at the 19th lap the unexpected: a McLaren with a yellow cam was going to park on the side. I really don't know why, because I know every helmet and almost never I fail when there is a driver to reckon, but this time I didn't and I thought he was Button. In fact I said "Oh, Button...", when my sister said after "No No, Hamilton!". So I realized my mistake and that Kimi was really first!

Kimi did a good job until the last lap, but before then it, I lived a lot of feelings like in the old times. First of all, the same fear, shivers and impatience for the finish line I experienced during Brazil 2007. Then the laughs for his crazy team radios (especially the "Yes yes yes, I am doing it all the time" - I have to say he looked very bored of all those recommendations, but in the same time very motivated to win the race), which were like that "Don't talk me in the middle of the corner" of Malaysia 2009. And in the end, the joy to celebrate again putting my right harm up at the chequered flag! And I can't forget how much I wished to listen to the Finnish anthem (which I love since I was at Monza this year) once again. Wonderful!

The old Kimi was back during the celebrations too. Like in the past, he was careful to don't show so much happiness during the final team radio of congratulation, in the parc fermé in front his mechanics and on the podium too, especially when he was interviewed by DC when he replied "NOT MUCH REALLY...". We know, Kimi really love to be described like a cold-hearted man. But I think this victory was one of his great wishes, maybe the biggest one. I can bet on it!

So, with this victory Kimi improved one of the best season of his career. And because F1 is like life (or at least, this is one of my thoughts), he made us remember once again that almost ever the most beautiful things in life aren't those that shines or look amazing since the beginning, but the most unexpected. Kiitos Kimi!

Oh Tony, you are always great with your articles. I love reading every single word you have to say about Kimi. The last paragraph of your article is just perfect and I totally agree with you! :)

Thanks again for participating!! :) #Grazie

Bom galerinha, este foi o penúltimo texto da semana em que deixei nas mãos de membros do IC escrever sobre a emoção de ver Kimi vencendo novamente. Amanhã encerrarei mais este especial do Iceman's Club com o meu texto.
