In the shadow of a teammate
Column 19.9.
If one would be a random follower of F1, then one might believe when arriving to Singapore that Romain Grosjean is the absolute elite of the sport.
I noticed already on the airport when standing in the passport-line, that there was one whole wall with a huge face picture of Romain Grosjean. And then when being in the traffic I saw every now and then taxi-cars with Grosjean's picture on their doors.
Swiss photographer Jad Sherif, with whom I shared the transport to the hotel, joked that perhaps Lotus had reserved some taxi-jobs for Grosjean just in case the youngster would not yet get in his own E20-car.
Of course we know that the oil-giant Total fincances Romain Grosjean's driving and all the publicity which comes along originates from the company's ad campaign they have launched in Singapore. Apparently they had a similar PR-strike already in spring during Bahrain GP.
However I have in a short time become assured that the people in Singapore are way more excited over Kimi Räikkönen's comeback to this track than they are excited about Grosjean - or other F1-stars.
My taxi-driver asked who will win the race on Sunday and he didn't stop asking until he heard that Räikkönen could win. At least his private taxi company is cheering for Kimi.
The Iceman's popularity in Far East is in it's own league. Kimi has already conquered Japan and China. Now there are more of these Asian places. At least Kimi has drove before in Singapore and Abu Dhabi. Korea and India will be completely new acquantancies.
