Favourite Driver Sunday: Kimi Raikkonen

Posted on February 12, 2012

As the new season approaches many people are anxious to know how Kimi Raikkonen will get on, after having two years away from the sport.

Very fittingly, today’s post is about Kimi Raikkonen and why Antonia Grzelak loves him.

Call it destiny – I was born right into Michael Schumacher’s great years. And I am German, so you can imagine the unbelievable hype around his personality and thank God – the sheer support Formula 1 got! I might have to add that my parents enjoy F1 a lot, so I started to watch races before I could even walk. But while everybody just supported Michael (Who can blame them?), I succumbed to a certain Finn– Kimi Raikkonen.

This young driver did not even have a complete super license when he started racing in F1 – just one for the first four races. But after he blew everybody’s mind with a sixth place at his first race, nobody worried about an extension of his license, but started to ask: When is this guy going to become world champion?

Well, winning a title with Sauber was hardly probable, so leaving Sauber was the only choice Kimi got if he wanted to become world champion. And he was equipped with not only a lot of talent and speed, but also good connections. Mika Hakkinen, a good friend of Kimi, left McLaren at the end of 2001 and commended Kimi highly. To make a long story short – Kimi got a cockpit at McLaren after his first season. And so his promotion started…

To be honest – 2002 was not one of Kimi’s best years… But 2003 was all the better: Every Kimi-fan will remember his first victory at the Malaysian GP. I don’t want to praise Kimi now, so let me just say – Ron Dennis started to cry because of Kimi’s excellent drive. So the season developed and Kimi even had the chance to win his first title, but several technical problems (which will accompany him through his whole carrier…) arranged it so that Mister Michael Schumacher perfected his sixth title at the end of the year.

At the end of 2003 I stopped watching F1, because of several reasons. And I really regret this right now, because I missed one of Kimi’s most important (well, ideally one of the most important) victories – his first one in Spa-Francorchamps. I’ll explain that later. But on a boring Sunday in May 2005 I didn’t know what to do and thank God watched TV. It might be that this was the most life changing choice I ever made…

On this Sunday it was time for the Monaco GP. So I leaned backwards and watched this race and witnessed one of the most amazing races I have ever seen. Seriously, Kimi was in his own league – he managed to do fastest laps non-stop and won so clearly, it was simply mind-blowing. And while watching this race I did not only rediscover my love for this Finn, but I also noticed how much this sport actually means to me and how much I missed it. I will always thank Kimi for this lesson.

Well, right now you might ask the question – why Kimi? 2005 was Fernando Alonso’s big year and Michael Schumacher was still racing, so why Kimi? To be honest – I don’t really know what it is that makes Kimi so special. Maybe it’s his pure speed. Or his callousness on the circuit. Or maybe just his unique personality. But it’s a fact that the whole package “Kimi Raikkonen” is absolutely fascinating. You may hate him, you may love him – but no one can deny that he is one of the best drivers we ever experienced racing. Do you remember Japan 2005? Starting 17th on the grid and winning after a spectacular overtaking manoeuvre against Giancarlo Fisichella in the last lap? Or all his breathtaking performances in Spa-Francorchamps? Seriously – what is this magic between Kimi and Spa? To witness Kimi in Spa-Francorchamps is, for me, one of the greatest pleasures in the world.

But also his personality: Yes, he doesn’t talk that much, but at least he is honest and most of all – he always keeps it real and stands up for what he believes in. And this is one of the most brilliant things I ever learned in my life.

So you see – I am completely devoted to this driver: I cheered for him in every single race, I celebrated when he finally became world champion in 2007, I was sad when he ruined his race at Spa in 2008 and I cried when he left Formula 1 at the end of 2009. Seeing him leave and with him the reason why I found myself, was probably one of the hardest things ever. I was praying for him to come back to F1 over the next two years and when he finally announced that he will come back, I felt like the happiest person on earth, because hearing “I’m coming back to Formula 1” from Mr. Kimi Raikkonen was – literally – a dream come true.

So the Iceman is back, for at least two more years. I don’t expect him to become world champion once more – although that would be wonderful. The only thing I expect from him is to do his magic again, to show the world and all the new fans why people hold on to him. And most of all I just want to see him race again, because this is one of the best things you can witness. His driving style is a combination of Lewis-Hamilton-aggression and Jenson-Button-intelligence with a good deal of Fernando-Alonso-experience and most of all – it’s full of speed and passion. So watch out ladies and gentlemen – the Iceman is on fire! Let’s hope that he rises like a phoenix from the ashes.
